ICS-100: MRC Volunteer Training

MRC is such a strong program in part due to the extensive training our volunteers complete. If you are considering becoming an MRC volunteer and would like to know more about what to expect from training, the below is for you! This is the first post in a series that will review each MRC Training course.

ICS-100: Introduction to the Incident Command System is the first course that prospective MRC Volunteers take. It takes about three hours to finish and can be completed online or in-person. For medical professionals, the course may count toward 0.3 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

The purpose of this course is to introduce the Incident Command System, or ICS.  ICS is the standardized approach to disaster management that is used by MRC Volunteers. MRC is not the only organization who uses ICS – in fact, ICS is the disaster management framework for all levels of government as well as the Sarasota COAD.  ICS is flexible and provides a structure for incident management as well as a process for adaptation as time and conditions change.

The ICS-100 course was developed by FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute.  As part of the course, volunteers will learn the history, features, principles and organizational structure of the ICS.

You can take the course now – visit this link to take it online. If you would rather take the course in person, please contact the MRC Coordinator.  In person classes are scheduled as interest demands (minimum 5 persons).
