What is the Marketplace?

Open enrollment is November 15 - February 15

Who can get coverage outside of the open enrollment period?

Some people are eligible to enroll in health coverage through the Marketplace outside of the open enrollment period.  People who qualify for a Special Enrollment Period are typically those who have certain life events such as getting married, having children, changing jobs, etc. More details...

Now there's an easier way to search for health coverage: the new, online Health Insurance Marketplace (sometimes called "Exchange"). The Marketplace is designed to help you find health insurance that fits your budget, with less hassle.

  • All your options in one place:  better options, better health.
  • Get a clear picture of what you'll pay and what you'll get before you make a choice.
  • Find out if you're eligible for lower costs on your monthly premium or out-of-pocket costs.

Benefits of the Marketplace

Thanks to the Marketplace, for the very first time, consumers will be able to:

  • Search one place for health coverage options
  • Get accurate information in easy-to-understand language on different plans
  • Make apples-to-apples comparisons of private insurance plans.
That includes comprehensive information about benefits and quality, side by side with facts about price, before you have to make a choice.

All health plans offered on the Marketplace must cover a comprehensive set of benefits, including physician visits, preventive care, hospital stays, and prescriptions. Plans must also treat everyone fairly; discrimination against pre-existing conditions will be banned. Coverage starts as soon as January 1, 2014.
